Weekend Events

The MAW 2010 event will be held at the Ruidoso Downs Race Track on the infield.  The event begins with a Golf Tournament Thursday, May 06, at The Links.  As always, every branch of the U.S. Armed Forces will be participating. Ft. Bliss is the lead support for 2010. The convoy will arrive at the Race Track at noon on Friday, May 07.  The public is encouraged to form two greeting lines through which the troops will pass for welcoming high-fives.  Military City will be erected, and spectators will be treated to hands on military equipment, artillery, bombs, simulators, demonstrations, drills, exercises including Bradley Fighting Vehicle, helicopter landings, canine training, downed pilot search and rescue, camo face painting, drunk driving course, rappelling, NM Space Museum rocket launches, German AF Tornado, 21 gun salute, Canon firing and much, much more.

Highlights for the Weekend

Military Convoy

The Military convoy will be arriving at the "Y" at approximately 11:50.  Visitors are encouraged to place themselves along the convoy route to welcome the military.  Components of the convoy will be arriving from Fort Bliss, White Sands Missile Range and New Mexico National Guard.  Vets on motorcycles will be escorting the convoy.  Good places to observe will be along Highway 70 near Beall's and K-Bob's to the entrance of Ruidoso Downs Race Track.  Arrival of the convoy is scheduled at the Race Track infield for 12:00 Noon.

 

Golf Tournament

The Golf Tournament will take place on Thursday, May 6, 2010 at The Links.  The tournament will be a 4 Person Scramble with a Shotgun Start at 9:30 AM.  Follow the above link for more information.

 

New Mexico National Guard Band  -  44TH Army Band

The 44th Army Band is the "Musical Military Ambassador" to the State of New Mexico. Their roots can be traced back to the "New Mexico Volunteers" and they have served during significant periods of the nation’s history, most notably during World War II as the 200th Coast Artillery Band.  On April 9th of 1942 they were surrendered to the Japanese and forced to march in Corregidor and on the Bataan Peninsula thus earning their name "The Battling Bastards of Bataan."  The unit was deactivated in the 60's and remained inactive until the late 70's when they returned as the 44th Army Band under the command of Chief Warrant Officer Paul Tafoya.

The 44th Army Band Ensemble will be in concert Saturday, 3:30 - 4:30 PM in the Race Track Grandstands.  This performance is FREE to the public.

 

Aircraft Flyover and Helicopter Demonstrations

Aircraft from the USAF, Marines, Army and German AF will perform a flyover demonstration on Saturday morning.  See the event schedule for more information regarding time and place.  The Army will present a training exercise of Fast Roping from a Blackhawk.  

 

Military City Setup

The public is invited to watch as the convoy arrives and then sets up their Military City and base of operations at the Race Track infield. 

 

Golden Knights Army Parachute Team 

In 1959 13 men joined together to form the Strategic Army Corps Sport Parachute Team, to compete in the then communist dominated sport of skydiving. The team performed so well that on June 1, 1961 the Army officially recognized, designated and activated the team as the U.S. Army Parachute Team. 

Speakers and Presentations

There will be three General Officer speakers at MAW 2010, one being MAW's newest Board Member, Brigadier General Jack R. Fox. Major General Jerry Grizzle, NMMI, will present awards to the Essay Writing Contest winners.  There will be a contest for the oldest veteran from each branch of service.  The MAW Ceremony will be on the field at 9:00 AM Saturday.  The MAW Reception will be held in the Turf Club Saturday, 2:00 PM.  For the first time, MAW is opening the Reception to the public to the first 100 guests with advanced reservation at $10. Major General Kenneth Montoya will be the keynote speaker and will acknowledge the MAW Wounded Warriors and POW, Maggie Trujillo.
